PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS
CAST REQUIREMENTS
FLEXIBLE CAST:
We encourage ethnic-blind and gender-blind casting: the authors will happily grant permission to alter a characeter's gender and/or sexual preference to fit your casting needs. Sung parts can also be reassigned to different voice types with a simple octave shift! The musical has been constructed with this in mind, so that the individual needs of each production can be met.
CAST SIZE:

The musical requires a minimum of 11 singing roles with doubling.

Without any doubling, there are 16 speaking roles.

An ensemble is optional, and can feature in up to 10 of the musical numbers.
MUSIC REQUIREMENTS

The music of “Dark Nights” is scored for soloists, ensemble, and a five-piece rock band (electric/acoustic guitar, bass, drums, keyboard [synthesizer/programming], and acoustic piano).

All songs can be performed with piano accompaniment only.

The score contains all voice parts, a piano reduction, and chords.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
STYLE:
Late 90s pop culture: the dialogue is raw, funny, and authentic in its teen idiom. The music is a genre collage, each song paying tribute to a different 90s musical style with 4-part vocal harmony featured prominently.
TIME & PLACE:
End of August 1998, the first day back to high school. A small city in the Northeastern United States.
SETTING:
The set is minimal: 8 chairs (dependent upon cast size) and a small table. The actors shift the chairs and table into place as each scene transitions seamlessly into the next.
